Urgent Call for Prioritizing Justice and Human Rights in Tunisia

On behalf of the Washington Center for Human Rights, we write to express our deep concern regarding the current crisis of shortage of bread and other basic foodstuffs in Tunisia. While we acknowledge the seriousness of this situation and the challenges it poses for the population, we urge you to focus on addressing the root causes of these issues and prioritize the promotion of justice and human rights in your country, rather than diverting blame onto external entities.

Tunisia has been a beacon of hope and inspiration for many in the region and beyond, particularly due to the successful democratic transition following the 2011 revolution. However, it is disheartening to witness the challenges that the country currently faces, including the recent food shortage crisis, which has further exacerbated the already complex socio-economic issues affecting Tunisian citizens.

The shortage of bread and other basic foodstuffs is a matter of utmost concern as it directly affects the daily lives and well-being of the population. We understand that such a crisis requires immediate attention and concerted efforts to ensure that the most vulnerable members of society have access to essential goods and services. It is imperative that the Tunisian government, under your leadership, takes responsibility for addressing these pressing issues and ensures that all citizens have access to an adequate and affordable food supply.

While addressing the immediate needs of the population is crucial, it is equally important to investigate and address the underlying causes of the food shortage crisis. Merely attributing blame to external entities such as “lobbyists and parties” without concrete evidence and thorough investigations may divert attention from the systemic issues that contribute to such crises. We urge you to conduct a transparent and comprehensive investigation to identify the root causes of the shortage, including examining issues related to agriculture, distribution networks, economic stability, and governance.

In order to address the crisis effectively, we believe it is necessary for the Tunisian government to adopt a multifaceted approach that encompasses both short-term measures and long-term structural reforms. We call upon your administration to take the following actions:

  1. Implement emergency measures: Allocate resources and establish mechanisms to ensure the immediate availability and affordability of bread and other essential foodstuffs to the population. Collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including farmers, distributors, and retailers, to address any bottlenecks in the supply chain.
  2. Conduct a comprehensive investigation: Establish an independent and impartial commission of inquiry to examine the causes of the food shortage crisis, including an assessment of the agricultural sector, distribution networks, and economic policies. This investigation should aim to identify any systemic issues, misconduct, or negligence that may have contributed to the crisis.
  3. Strengthen the agricultural sector: Develop comprehensive strategies to enhance the productivity, sustainability, and resilience of the agricultural sector in Tunisia. This includes providing support and incentives to farmers, promoting sustainable farming practices, investing in infrastructure, and improving access to credit and markets for small-scale farmers.
  4. Enhance distribution networks: Evaluate and improve the efficiency and transparency of distribution networks to ensure that food reaches all regions of the country in a timely manner. This may involve addressing issues such as transportation, storage, and fair pricing mechanisms.
  5. Promote economic stability: Implement measures to address the underlying economic challenges that contribute to food shortages. This includes promoting investment in diverse sectors, creating job opportunities, combating corruption, and ensuring fair economic policies that prioritize the well-being of all Tunisians.
  6. Empower civil society and human rights defenders: Create an enabling environment for civil society organizations and human rights defenders to play an active role in monitoring and advocating for social justice, transparency, and accountability. Protect their rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and association, and engage in constructive dialogue with them to address the challenges facing Tunisian society.
  7. Strengthen the rule of law: Uphold the principles of democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights. Ensure the independence and impartiality of the judiciary and guarantee equal access to justice for all citizens. Combat impunity by holding accountable those responsible for any misconduct or violations that have contributed to the crisis.
  8. Foster inclusive dialogue: Engage in inclusive and participatory dialogue with all stakeholders, including civil society organizations, trade unions, professional associations, and marginalized communities. This dialogue should aim to address their concerns, incorporate their perspectives into policymaking processes, and foster social cohesion and national unity.

We understand that addressing the food shortage crisis requires a collective effort and the involvement of various stakeholders, both within Tunisia and from the international community. The Washington Center for Human Rights stands ready to support Tunisia in its efforts to promote justice, human rights, and socio-economic development. We are committed to working collaboratively with Tunisian institutions, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to overcome the challenges faced by the country and build a society that is inclusive, prosperous, and respectful of the rights and dignity of all its citizens.

In conclusion, we respectfully urge you, President Saied, to prioritize justice, human rights, and the well-being of the Tunisian people in your actions and policies. By addressing the root causes of the food shortage crisis, promoting economic stability, and fostering an environment of respect for human rights and the rule of law, Tunisia can overcome its challenges and emerge stronger as a nation. The Washington Center for Human Rights stands ready to offer any support and assistance necessary to advance the cause of justice and human rights in Tunisia.

We kindly request your personal attention to these urgent matters and hope that you will seize this opportunity to make a positive and lasting impact on the lives of Tunisian citizens.

Sincerely,

Washington Center for Human Rights.
