Washington Center condemns Israel’s electricity shutdown in Gaza

The Washington Center strongly criticized Israel for its actions to cut off electricity to the Gaza Strip. This move by Israel worsened the already dire situation in Palestine. On March 1, 2025, the first phase of the ceasefire deal ended. Exactly 9 days after the ceasefire deal expired, Israel cut off electricity to Gaza. This blocking aid and cutting off electricity is a clear violation of human rights and a form of collective punishment. These unjust and inhumane actions by Israel increase the suffering of civilians and violate international laws.

According to UN Humanitarian Coordinator Muhannad Hadi, further delays in delivering aid to Gaza residents will undo ‌progress achieved by the first phase of the ceasefire deal. Since October of 2023, Israel has provided minor electricity supplies to Gaza.

The latest decision to properly shut down electricity has been greatly supported by far-rights that backed Israel’s actions to blockade necessities and oppose humanitarian aid. However, these actions are deeply concerning and demand immediate action from international leaders to urge Israel to stop these violations.

The consequences of this electricity shut down are devastating. Due to fuel shortages, the operating capacity of Gaza’s main desalination plant was reduced to more than 80% which doesn’t give safe drinking water to millions. If the situation persists then it is expected that backup generators will run out within 10 days. Due to this situation, the water system will collapse, putting the lives of millions in danger due to a shortage of clean water. Gaza’s main desalination plant

Recently Israel’s human rights organization Gisha renewed its petition to restore humanitarian access. According to this group, a complete blockage of aid violated Israel’s legal obligations.

We demand immediate action to save the lives of Gaza residents and the restoration of electricity, fuel, and humanitarian aid.

It is the responsibility of the international community to take strict action against Israel to prevent further suffering. These inhumane actions by Israel harm ‌civilians and make ‌the situation worse. The world cannot remain silent while millions in Gaza face life-threatening conditions.
