WCHR: human rights include reproductive rights

The United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which secured abortion rights in the United States, in a 6-3 vote today. Washington Center for Human Rights, an organization dedicated to the expansion and protection of human rights, sees the Supreme Court as not only limiting human rights that Americans have relied on for two generations, but also signaling to other nations that long-held rights of their citizens can be eliminated by decree.

Make no mistake: this case is devastating for all Americans, as it not only deprives women of autonomy over their reproductive health, but also exposes other fundamental rights, such as contraception, marriage equality, and privacy, to erosion. The Supreme Court’s radical opinion, which overturns 50 years of legal precedent, encourages authoritarians around the world to similarly undermine women’s and human rights in their own populations.
